![]() ![]() ![]() It’s not a book that blew my mind but you know what? I’ve realized that you can give a book a high rating just for the sole fact that you really, really enjoyed it. This is my third time reading this book and I have to say that I liked it just as much as the other two times. My mind immediately went to this series (which is partially even wrote by Kaufman). With the loss that I was feeling though, I just wanted something familiar, something that I knew I had liked before. How do you live again, knowing what waits for you in the end?Īfter I finished Aurora Rising I knew that I wasn’t yet ready to venture out of the world of sci-fi. ![]() ![]() The book was controversial for the turn of the century, and that made it difficult for Dreiser to get it published. Apparently, Sister Carrie was largely inspired by one of his sister’s lives. ![]() As I recall from the introduction, Dreiser was the first post-Civil War author to write about the experience instead of the spectacle of poverty. This classic novel was required reading for the course I am taking about American Realism. Sister Carrie, by Theodore Dreiser, is a critique on capitalism and a spectacle of power and industry. What ensues is materialism, love affairs, and a fight for survival. When she finally gets to her sister’s, she has trouble finding and keeping work as an inexperienced worker. She meets a dandy traveling salesman on the train who helps her find her way in Chicago-for a price. Carrie Meeber, a young woman from Wisconsin, moves to Chicago in the 19th Century in hopes of finding work and becoming successful in whatever she does. ![]() ![]() This from the guy who avoids all commitment? Boundaries. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you follow the common-sense dictates of consciousness you become, effectively, greedy and unwise. Purposive consciousness, pulls out from the total mind, sequences which do not have the loop structure which is characteristic of the whole systemic structure. On the one hand we have the systemic nature of the individual human being, the systemic nature of the culture in which he lives, and the systemic nature of the biological ecological system around him and on the other hand, the curious twist in the systemic nature of the individual man whereby consciousness is almost by necessity, blinded to the systemic nature of the man himself. A pathology – a loss of balance – is threatened. Conscious purpose is now empowered to upset the balances of the body, of society, and of the biological world around us. Today the purposes of consciousness are implemented by more and more effective machinery, transportation systems, airplanes, weaponry, medicine, pesticides and so forth. ![]() |
